- Trump sidelines the UN in negotiations on Gaza and Ukraine.
- As reported by EFE.
- Details below.
The administration of Donald Trump has decided to bypass the United Nations in its efforts to negotiate solutions to the two most critical ongoing conflicts: the war in Gaza and the invasion of Ukraine.
This exclusion of the UN adds to the drastic budget cuts the president has implemented against the organization.
It creates a scenario in which the international body could be relegated to a merely humanitarian role, losing influence in global political affairs.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has made no secret of his skepticism toward the UN’s role in resolving international conflicts.
“Many of the conflicts we work on should be resolved with the help of the United Nations, but we never see that help,” he stated in February, expressing his dissatisfaction with the institution.

Experts point out that Trump’s stance is not entirely new, as it aligns with a traditional Republican distrust of the UN.
“In general, Republicans harbor antipathy toward the UN,” explained Richard Gowan of the Crisis Group think tank.
However, in Trump’s case, this distrust is intensified by his preference for diplomacy based on direct agreements between major powers such as Russia and China—bypassing multilateral organizations.
Trump’s distancing from the UN has also manifested in his lack of communication with its Secretary-General, António Guterres, with whom he has not spoken since his inauguration or even following his electoral victory five months ago.
A similar situation is seen with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has reportedly ignored calls from Guterres for over a year.
Financial Blows and Reduced International Cooperation
It’s not just a matter of diplomatic exclusion.
Within his first days in office, Trump announced the US withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as significant cuts to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
This decision represented a massive financial blow to international cooperation.
In 2024, the U.S. contribution accounted for 47% of the total funds allocated to these programs.
Unilateralism in Gaza and Ukraine
Despite the U.S. positioning itself as a key mediator in the Gaza and Ukraine conflicts, it has done so without achieving meaningful progress.
In neither case has the administration succeeded in bringing the conflicting parties to the negotiating table.
At the same time, the UN has been excluded from talks held in Riyadh and Qatar.
This exclusion further reinforces Trump’s view that international crises can be addressed without involving the UN.
