The President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed an executive order this Thursday that will make it easier for states and cities to remove homeless people from the streets and send them to treatment centers, even if they have not given their consent.
Trump explained that his administration has adopted a new approach to address the problem of homelessness, focusing on protecting public safety.
The order instructs Attorney General Pam Bondi to take legal actions to overturn judicial precedents and decrees.
That limit the ability of local and state governments to transfer homeless people to treatment centers.

Additionally, the measure requests that Bondi provide assistance to state and local governments, according to Efe and Telemundo.
This is to allow civil commitment and appropriate treatment for people with mental illnesses who pose a danger to others.

“The relocation of homeless individuals to long-term institutions to receive humane treatment through the proper use of civil commitment will restore public order,” the executive order details.
Furthermore, the regulation requires the Departments of Justice, Health and Human Services, Housing, and Transportation to prioritize federal grants.

For states and cities that enforce bans on the open use of illicit drugs, urban camping, and loitering.
This measure follows a directive from March in which Trump ordered the National Park Service to remove homeless encampments and graffiti on federal lands.
According to the White House, the number of people who experienced homelessness on the streets of the United States during a single night in 2024 reached a historic record of 274,224 people.
With this order, Trump seeks to restore public order and address the growing homelessness crisis in the country.
