Donald Trump has repeatedly violated the gag order imposed by the judge in his criminal trial.

On Tuesday, he was fined $9,000 after the judge found nine instances where he had commented on people involved in the trial.

Judge Juan M. Merchan ruled that the former president made several public statements on Truth Social attacking witnesses.

Trump violates gag order again

In addition to Tuesday’s fine, the prosecution requested on Thursday that he be fined an addition $4,000, for violating the gag order four more times.

This order prohibits public discussion about witnesses, prosecutors and jury members involved in his criminal trial.

Trump made comments attacking people involved in the trial on his social network as well as on his campaign website.

Could the former president be sent to prison for contempt?

According to EFE, prosecutors presented four pieces of evidence for each of the Trump’s violations.

The businessman had already been warned that continued contempt of the order could lead to jail time, but this won’t happen now.

The evidence consists of several statements made by the businessman over the past few months during his presidential campaign.

In one alleged instance, Trump stated that the jury was formed very quickly and feared it might not be impartial since New York is predominantly Democratic.

Trump’s defense opposes the fines and the gag order

However, Trump’s defense team was not idle, providing the judge with evidence about the case and the media attention it is attracting.

They argued that he has the right to answer questions about the situation, as well as to defend himself against attacks.

This morning, as Trump entered the courtroom, he declared that it was «nice to be able to campaign one day without being in this ridiculous show trial.»

Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up a sexual relationship with porn actress Stormy Daniels during his 2016 campaign.
