U.S. President Donald Trump has ruled out the possibility of seeking a third term in 2028.

In an interview aired today on NBC’s «Meet the Press,» Trump explained that while many people have urged him to run again, he believes the Constitution doesn’t allow it.

“I don’t know if it’s constitutional… But it’s not something I plan to do,” he said. Trump stated that he is focused on his current four-year term and avoided engaging in speculation about his potential succession.

He acknowledged, however, that the idea of a third term has been discussed by some of his supporters.

Despite this, Trump publicly endorsed Vance, whom he described as “a fantastic and brilliant guy,” and Rubio, whom he said is “great” to lead the Make America Great Again movement—the same movement that brought him to the White House twice.

Vance May Have an Advantage in the Succession Process

He also noted that Vance, as the current Vice President, could have an edge in the succession process.

“Certainly, you’d say that someone who’s Vice President, if that person is outstanding, I guess they’d have an advantage,” Trump said.

Although the U.S. Constitution states that a president may not serve more than two terms, Trump has previously hinted there are “methods” to circumvent the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidential terms.

However, amending the Constitution to allow a third term would be a complex process, requiring either a two-thirds vote in Congress or two-thirds of the states calling for a constitutional convention.

The idea of a third term has gained traction in Trump Stores, where products bearing the slogan “Trump 2028” are sold—
leading to speculation about his intentions. In response, Trump clarified that he is not pursuing a third term, though he admitted many people are promoting the 2028 idea.

“I want to have a great four years and hand it over to someone—ideally a great Republican,” Trump concluded, making it clear that his focus remains on his current term and ensuring a successful succession within the Republican Party.
