- UN Warns Food Supplies Are Running Out in Gaza
- Reported by CNN
- Here Are the Details
The World Food Programme (WFP) announced that its food reserves in the Gaza Strip have been depleted after nearly eight weeks of blockade imposed by Israel.
This has left hundreds of thousands of Palestinians without their main source of sustenance.
In a statement, the WFP confirmed that it delivered the last available provisions to community kitchens it supports in Gaza, which are also expected to run out of supplies in the coming days.
According to UN figures, approximately 80% of Gaza’s population—over two million people—currently relies on these charity kitchens for food, as other supply sources have collapsed.

The WFP had been supporting 37 community kitchens, producing around 500,000 meals daily.
With these operations ceasing, the humanitarian situation in Gaza enters an even more critical phase, in a context where markets, bakeries, and other basic services have shut down due to the lack of essential goods.
Israel closed access to food, fuel, medicine, and other supplies to Gaza on March 2, before resuming bombings and ground offensives two weeks later, breaking a two-month truce with Hamas.
The Israeli government claims the strategy aims to pressure the Islamist group to release hostages still held captive. However, human rights organizations have described the blockade as a «starvation tactic» and warn that it could constitute a war crime.

The lack of new supplies has led to the disappearance of essential foods in Gaza’s markets, including meat, eggs, fruits, dairy products, and various vegetables.
Prices for the few available goods have skyrocketed, making them unaffordable for most families, who now rely almost exclusively on canned foods.
The situation regarding child nutrition is alarming. According to what the UN warns, March saw 3,700 cases of acute malnutrition among children, an 80% increase compared to the previous month.
Despite efforts, resources have dwindled dramatically, and only 22,000 children received nutritional supplements, a 70% drop from February.
The vast majority of bakeries have shut down, and the WFP has been forced to halt distribution of basic foodstuffs due to lack of supplies. Community kitchens, working with minimal ingredients, can now only offer simple pasta or rice dishes.

The humanitarian organization World Central Kitchen, one of the largest in Gaza that does not depend on the WFP, reported that its kitchens have run out of protein sources, now cooking stews solely with canned vegetables.
Moreover, due to the fuel shortage, they are resorting to burning wooden pallets for cooking.
World Central Kitchen also operates the only active bakery in Gaza, producing 87,000 pitas a day.
Meanwhile, the WFP stated that it has 116,000 tons of food ready to be sent to Gaza if Israel reopens the border crossings. This amount would be enough to feed one million people for four months.
A Devastating Conflict in Gaza
Since the Israeli offensive began following Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023, over 51,000 Palestinians have died, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health.
Israel justifies its military operation as an effort to destroy Hamas, accusing the group of using civilians as human shields.
In the initial attack, Hamas militants killed around 1,200 people in southern Israel and kidnapped 251 hostages, of whom 59 remain in captivity.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen, and with humanitarian aid stalled, the risk of mass famine grows with each passing day.
