US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick reiterated this Sunday that the Donald Trump administration will impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada starting Tuesday, March 4, despite both countries’ efforts to curb fentanyl trafficking.
«On Tuesday, there will be tariffs for Mexico and Canada. We will let the president and his team negotiate the exact details,» Lutnick stated in an interview with Fox News.
The official acknowledged that both Mexico and Canada have strengthened their border control measures and described their efforts as «reasonable.»
However, he insisted that the fentanyl crisis continues to claim lives in the US, which, according to him, justifies the imposition of these tariffs.

At the beginning of February, Trump signed an executive order imposing 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada as a retaliatory measure against fentanyl trafficking.
However, he postponed their enforcement until March 4 after both countries strengthened their controls and extradited several drug cartel leaders.
In an effort to halt the implementation of these tariffs, high-level delegations from Mexico and Canada traveled to the US last week.
As part of the negotiations, Mexico extradited 29 drug cartel leaders, including: Rafael Caro Quintero, former leader of the Guadalajara Cartel; and Miguel Ángel and Omar Treviño Morales, former leaders of Los Zetas.

Despite the actions taken by Canada and Mexico, the White House remains firm on its decision to impose the tariffs.
Experts warn that this measure could lead to: Higher prices on imported goods, increased inflation in the US, economic strain on the supply chain.
Mexico and Canada are the US’s main trade partners, making this decision even more impactful.
With just hours left before implementation, uncertainty continues to grow over the economic consequences of these tariffs.
