- Heavy snowfall hits the US
- Extreme cold alerts issued
- Severe frost risk
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued multiple winter weather alerts on Wednesday across several US states, warning of hazardous conditions as temperatures plummet and heavy snow spreads across the north.
Authorities predict up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of snow in some areas, along with dangerous winds and extreme frost.
In Alaska, Atigun Pass was among the first regions placed under warning, where between five and ten inches of snow and wind gusts of up to 55 mph are expected.
“The roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous,” warned the NWS.
Heavy Snowfall Across the Midwest and Northeast US

Officials cautioned that conditions could disrupt travel on Wednesday and cause damage to trees and infrastructure. In addition, the combination of strong winds and heavy snow could reduce visibility to less than a mile in some regions.
The warnings extend beyond the far north. The National Weather Service also issued frost and freeze alerts for much of the Midwest and Northeast, marking the arrival of the first true cold snap of the season.

Among the most affected states are Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont, where overnight lows could drop into the 20s (Fahrenheit).
In Minnesota and Wisconsin, meteorologists anticipate the end of the growing season due to freezing temperatures. Counties such as Crow Wing, Itasca, St. Louis, Douglas, and Iron are forecast to see the coldest readings.
“Frost and freezing conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation,” the alert warns. It also cautions residents about potential damage to unprotected pipes and outdoor systems.
The Coldest Air of the Season
In Pennsylvania’s McKean County, temperatures could dip to near 20°F between Wednesday and Thursday. Among their winter weather alerts, US meteorologists recommend covering plants and letting water faucets drip overnight to prevent pipes from freezing.
In Idaho, low temperatures have also triggered alerts for the Arco/Mud Lake Desert and Snake River Plains. The NWS forecasts lows near 27°F in rural areas, while urban zones may remain slightly warmer.
“Urban areas around Idaho Falls and Pocatello are likely to stay near or just above freezing,” the statement added.
Local authorities are urging drivers to use caution during early morning hours due to the risk of icy roads.
Winter Precautions and Alerts in the US
A spokesperson for the NWS in Duluth, Minnesota, stated that the region is experiencing “the coldest weather we’ve seen so far this season.” Current temperatures range from 21°F to 39°F (-6°C to 4°C), though southerly winds could bring temporary relief later in the week.
The NWS advises residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated through official weather channels. It also urges people to protect pets, plants, and outdoor water systems from the extreme cold.
Experts expect conditions to gradually improve by the weekend, although the threat of heavy snow and frost will persist in mountainous and rural areas across the northern US.
The overall message is clear: the first US winter storm snow alerts 2025 signal that winter has arrived earlier than expected. And even though the calendar still says autumn, much of the northern United States is already facing a premature taste of the cold season, Newsweek reported.
