The United States may soon add Romania to its Visa Waiver Program (VWP), which would allow Romanian citizens to enter the country without needing a visa.
Currently, 40 nations are part of this program, which streamlines travel for tourism and business by eliminating the lengthy visa application process.
The US government explained that the VWP allows travelers from designated countries to enter the US without a visa, as long as they hold a valid passport recognized under the program.
Other international visitors must apply for visas such as the B-1 (for business) or B-2 (for tourism or medical treatment), with the length of stay determined by a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer.
US May Waive Visa for Romania

This system has streamlined the flow of travelers between participating countries and the US, encouraging both economic and cultural exchange.
Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed it has been in ongoing talks with US officials and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
However, the ministry stated it has yet to receive any formal communication regarding an update to the travel authorization system.
In a statement, the Romanian Foreign Ministry emphasized that it continues to actively pursue visa-free access for its citizens.
Such a change would bring significant benefits to tourism, economic growth, and diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Meanwhile, the U.S. government reminded travelers that the I-94 form determines how long foreign nationals may stay in the country for business or tourism.
This decision is made by a CBP officer upon entry into the United States.
This means that although citizens of visa-waiver countries can enter without a visa, they must still meet immigration requirements and prove that their stay is temporary and for a specific purpose.

If Romania is added to the VWP, its citizens would be allowed to visit the US without a visa for up to 90 days.
This would mark a major step forward in bilateral relations and ease travel between the two countries.
The visa waiver could benefit thousands of Romanian travelers visiting for tourism, studies, or business by removing the current bureaucratic hurdles.
Economically, the policy could increase Romanian tourist traffic to the US, boosting the tourism industry and strengthening trade ties.
It would also facilitate investment and collaboration opportunities between Romanian and American companies, according to El Heraldo de México.
The final decision depends on the U.S. government’s security evaluation and requirements assessment before admitting a new country into the VWP.
