Outrage over mass layoffs and the cuts proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump was clearly on display during a public town hall held Friday in Tucson, Arizona.

The event, led by Democratic Senator Mark Kelly, brought together dozens of citizens concerned about the potential impact of Trump’s policies on their jobs, social services, and the public healthcare system.

Among the attendees was Michael Brown, a U.S. Postal Service (USPS) worker and Republican voter, who openly expressed regret for having supported Trump in the elections.

“He promised to improve the economy, that prices would go down, but none of that is happening. On the contrary, I’m afraid things are going to get much worse,” Brown told EFE, fearful of losing his job following announcements of government downsizing led by Trump and Elon Musk, who is in charge of the effort.

The USPS is one of the entities potentially facing major cuts, deepening the uncertainty for workers like Brown. “Yes, I regret voting for Trump,” he said with visible frustration.

Another critical concern raised at the meeting was the potential reduction of Medicaid, the healthcare program on which millions of low-income Americans rely.

Through tears, Rita Pérez, a disabled resident, denounced that the Trump administration’s actions could seriously endanger her life.

“It’s alarming what’s happening. President Trump needs to understand that he’s playing with people’s lives—especially those like me who need Medicaid to survive,” said Pérez, who fears losing access to essential therapies and treatments.

Senator Mark Kelly accused Trump and the Republican Party of pushing Medicaid cuts to fund tax extensions for large corporations and millionaires.

“The Energy and Commerce Committee is looking to cut $880 billion, and we’re certain Medicaid is in their sights,” Kelly warned, drawing boos from the audience directed at Trump and Musk.

Impact of Trump’s Cuts on Families and Education

Mothers of children with special needs also shared how they could be affected if Medicaid and the Department of Education—now being dismantled by Trump—stop funding assistance programs and therapies.

“The impact will be devastating for many families. My son relies on those therapies to be able to speak and develop, and now we don’t know what will happen,” said one mother who preferred to remain anonymous.

Voter regret is directed not only at Trump and Republicans, but also at Democrats, whom they accuse of not doing enough to stop these policies.

“We’re fighting very hard,” Kelly responded, urging the community to stay united and pressure their local representatives to oppose the cuts.

“The Regretful Are Crying”

Veteran Henry Trejo, who was present at the meeting, strongly criticized both Trump and Republican lawmakers who have avoided public events for fear of facing voter backlash.

“Trump doesn’t care about the people, only about millionaires,” said Trejo, adding that he’s seen many Hispanic voters express regret for having supported Trump. “They cry, saying they voted for Trump, but not for this,” he emphasized.

Trejo also urged Democrats to take a firmer stance and to organize more community meetings. “People need to know that change is still possible,” he concluded.

As criticism and fears grow, the Trump administration faces mounting public opposition that, if not addressed, could have a significant impact on future elections.
