The move comes after several days of protests, widespread vandalism and a nightly curfew in Philadelphia before Election Day, after police fatally shot a black man with a history of mental health problems.
Walmart made a similar move in the wake of the police murder of George Floyd that sparked sometimes violent demonstrations against police brutality and injustice against African Americans.
Last year, Walmart stopped selling ammunition for handguns and short-barreled rifles while requesting that customers not openly carry firearms in their stores, even where state law allows.

The company also ended the sale of pistols in Alaska. In accordance with The Wall Street Journal, Walmart sent a letter to the managers of the different stores where arms are sold in the United States «due to the current riots in isolated areas of the country and as a precaution.»
