  • War between Gaza and Hamas.
  • The White House confirms direct contact.
  • Could a peace agreement be reached?

The White House confirmed on Wednesday, March 5, that «ongoing conversations and discussions» are taking place with the Islamist group Hamas to bring an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.

These talks are unprecedented, as the United States has never before engaged in direct dialogue with Hamas.

This is because Washington has classified it as a terrorist organization since 1997.

During a press briefing, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that these conversations are being led by Adam Boehler, the presidential envoy for hostages.

She also confirmed that the discussions have been conducted with Israel’s knowledge and consultation.

«The special envoy leading these negotiations has the authority to speak with anyone, and Israel was consulted on this matter,» Leavitt said.

Leavitt declined to disclose the details of the exchanges due to the sensitivity of the issue but reiterated that «conversations and discussions are ongoing.»

She defended this diplomatic approach with Hamas as a potential pathway to ending the war in Gaza.

The conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than 48,000 Palestinians, while 59 Israeli hostages remain captive, over 30 of whom are believed to have died.

«Dialogue and speaking with people worldwide to do what is best for the American people is something the president believes in,» Leavitt stated.

«This is a good-faith effort to do the right thing for the American people,» she added.

According to Axios, the meetings between Boehler and Hamas representatives took place in Doha over the past few weeks.

The primary focus of these discussions has been the release of American hostages, which falls under Boehler’s role as hostage affairs envoy.

However, negotiations have also addressed the possibility of a broader agreement involving the release of all hostages held in Gaza and a potential ceasefire, according to EFE.

On Wednesday, Hamas also confirmed that it had engaged in direct talks with Washington.

This was stated by Bassem Naim, a senior official within the Palestinian group, in an interview with EFE.
