Suspense gripped the Mexican football final between América and Cruz Azul following a crucial referee decision.
In a controversial moment, the referee awarded a penalty against Cruz Azul due to a harsh tackle by Carlos Rodolfo Rotondi.
The play was meticulously reviewed by the referee, extending the tension in the stadium. Finally, the penalty was taken by Henry Martín.
Martín sent the ball into the net, becoming the first player to score in this thrilling final. Is there already a winner? Uncertainty reigns as the match continues.
ALL EYES ON THE LAST GAME

With the draw in the first match, all eyes were on the second leg, which was delayed by over half an hour due to bad weather.
Unlike previous rounds, the winner of the final must be decided on the field, whether in regular time, extra time, or penalties.
América was seeking a historic back-to-back championship, a feat achieved by only three teams since 1996: Pumas, León, and Atlas.
«We have to appreciate the team’s effort to get the result. We missed some opportunities, but we come away with a good draw,» Quiñones said, according to The Associated Press.
AMERICA HAD RECOVERED

Quiñones’ goal in the first match not only leveled the score but also showcased América’s resilience.
Coach Jardine praised his team’s maturity and experience, highlighting their positive reaction after Antuna’s early penalty.
«We responded positively to that emotional blow. The team showed maturity and the experience that brought us to the final and made us champions,» said Jardine.
Cruz Azul was the surprise of the tournament, especially considering their position in the Apertura 2023, where they finished 16th out of 18 teams.
CRUZ AZUL

Anselmi, in his first tournament in Mexico, has led La Máquina to the final with a series of tactics and strategies that have surprised many.
«We’re going to correct things and plan with some nuances to surprise the opponent,» Anselmi commented, aware of the importance of the upcoming match at Estadio Azteca.
His team showed their responsiveness and resilience in the first encounter, with key actions such as Antuna’s penalty and goal-scoring opportunities created by Rodrigo Huescas.
The Águilas of América and La Máquina of Cruz Azul faced each other in a decisive showdown.
