According to information from The Associated Press, this is the second time that the Mexican Women’s National Team has defeated the US team.

The USA came to the Dignity Health Sports Park (home of the Los Angeles Galaxy in MLS) with a record of 40-1-1 against their regional rival, with their only previous defeat being a 2-1 loss during World Cup qualification in 2010.

It was the first loss for the USA under interim coach Twila Kilgore, who took over the team after the dramatic exit from the World Cup last summer in the round of 16.

Mexico finished as the leader of Group A in the W Gold Cup, while the USA finished second. Both teams advance to the knockout round.

Lizbeth Ovalle, a Tigres player, put Mexico ahead in the 28th minute. Becky Sauerbrunn attempted to clear a ball, but it rebounded to Ovalle, who controlled it and sent a floated shot over goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and two American defenders.

It was the first goal allowed by the United States against a CONCACAF opponent in 33 matches.

Mexico came close to scoring the second goal in added time of the first half, but Karla Nieto’s long-distance shot hit the crossbar.

Pelayo scored the second goal in added time of the second half, and the Mexican players celebrated extensively on the field.

The only victory for El Tricolor occurred in 2010, a 2-1 win in the semifinals of the Concacaf Women’s Championship in Cancun, Mexico.

The USWNT has shown why they hold the title of the CWC and why they want to become the first champions of the W Gold Cup.

Morgan, who typically wears the number 13, now wears Fishel’s number 7, in compliance with CONCACAF rules.
