Selena Quintanilla’s legacy lives on, with songs that continue to inspire generations.
The relationship between Selena and Saldívar started off close.
Saldívar was a former nurse who became the president of Selena’s fan club and later the manager of her boutique, Selena Etc.
However, she was fired after being accused of embezzling funds.
At a meeting at the Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Selena attempted to retrieve financial documents when Yolanda Saldívar shot her with a .38 caliber Taurus revolver.
The singer managed to reach the motel lobby and identified her assailant before collapsing. She was rushed to the hospital but died an hour later.
Saldívar barricaded herself in her vehicle with the loaded weapon and engaged in a nine-hour standoff with police before surrendering.
During her trial, she claimed the shooting was accidental, but she was sentenced to life in prison.
