At a critical moment for Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that his recent conversation with Donald Trump was the most significant to date.
The meeting took place at the Vatican, during Pope Francis’s funeral held in April, marking a key moment in bilateral relations.
It was the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since their tense encounter in the Oval Office last February.
“I believe we had the best conversation with President Trump of all the ones we’ve had so far,” Zelensky said on Friday.

The two leaders discussed critical issues, including US sanctions and the state of Kyiv’s air defenses.
Zelensky noted that although the conversation was brief, it was uniquely deep. “It may have been the shortest, but it was the most substantial,” the Ukrainian president added.

Kyiv’s concern over a possible distancing from Washington has grown in recent months.
Ukraine fears the US may reduce its military and diplomatic support amid growing international fatigue.
Air Defense and Sanctions on the Bilateral Agenda
President Trump, for his part, has shown signs of impatience with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to ‘CNN en Español’, in February, he questioned whether the Kremlin leader truly had any willingness to reach peace.
In their most recent meeting, Zelensky and Trump also discussed the potential purchase of American weapons.
“I told him the quantity, and he said they would work on it—that these things are not free,” Zelensky told the press.
The Ukrainian leader described Trump’s comments on sanctions as “very forceful.”
Additionally, both agreed that a temporary ceasefire could be the first step toward a broader resolution.
“A 30-day ceasefire is the first step in the right direction,” they agreed, according to Zelensky’s remarks.
The diplomatic tone was further reinforced with the signing of a key agreement between Washington and Kyiv.
Progress After the Summit: New Agreement on Minerals
The pact, focused on strategic minerals, was reached after months of negotiation and was confirmed by Ukraine’s Minister of Economy.
According to Yulia Svyrydenko, both nations will establish a joint investment fund, which may include military assistance.
Zelensky emphasized that the meeting with Trump at the Vatican was decisive in securing this agreement.
“I’m sure that after our meeting at the Vatican, President Trump began to see things a little differently,” he stated.
Tensions Over Russian Truce and Kyiv’s Warnings
These statements come amid renewed tensions in the conflict with Russia. Putin proposed a three-day ceasefire from May 8 to 11, coinciding with Russia’s Victory Day.
Zelensky rejected the initiative, arguing that symbolic gestures were not enough. “We are not here to play games and create a pleasant atmosphere that allows Putin to emerge from isolation on May 9,” he declared.
In his message, the Ukrainian president also issued a warning to leaders planning to travel to Moscow for the commemorative events.
“Kyiv cannot be held responsible for what happens on the territory of the Russian Federation,” he said. These remarks prompted an immediate response from Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Russian foreign ministry stated that his comments amounted to a threat against their territory.
Figures such as Xi Jinping and Aleksandr Lukashenko are expected to meet in Moscow on May 9.
The date commemorates the end of World War II and the Soviet sacrifice during the conflict.
But far from celebratory rhetoric, the atmosphere remains filled with uncertainty, warnings, and diplomatic gestures shaping the course of the war, reported ‘CNN en Español’.
