  • Record subzero temperatures expected

Meteorologists are warning that an intense cold wave will move into the central and eastern United States this weekend, bringing the lowest temperatures of the season and possibly setting new cold records across several regions.

“A cold wave will arrive in the US this weekend, delivering the coldest air of the season to the Midwest and Northeast, with widespread frost reaching the Deep South — and potentially record lows even as far south as Florida,” explained meteorologist Jonathan Erdman of Weather.com in his online forecast.

Arctic Air Mass to Bring Extreme Cold Wave to the US

Meteorologist Ryan Maue described the incoming event as “historic cold”, comparing it to Siberian conditions.

According to the Weather Prediction Center (WPC), “a series of cold fronts will push southward through the central and eastern US, bringing an arctic air mass that is both cold and dry.”

Subzero Temperatures and Possible Records

US forecast maps show widespread lows in the 20s (°F) this winter, according to USA Today.

Across the Midwest, South, and East, daytime highs will be the coldest of the autumn season, said Erdman.

The US northern plains and upper Midwest are expected to experience the most severe conditions — with highs barely reaching freezing temperatures and lows plunging into the 10–15°F range, potentially below 10°F in some areas.

Overall, temperatures are expected to range 10 to 20 degrees below normal for early November.

By Sunday and Monday nights, the southern plains and parts of the southeast could see below-freezing temperatures, with frost reaching the Gulf Coast by Monday night, November 10.

Impacts and Safety Recommendations for US Winter Forecast

AccuWeather advised residents to take precautions to protect outdoor pipes, irrigation systems, and plants that have not yet been winterized.

This event is expected to end the growing season across many regions that have not yet seen a hard frost — from parts of the central Great Plains to much of the southeast.

Cold conditions could also lead to light snow accumulation across parts of the Midwest and Appalachians, including areas farther south and at lower elevations than usual, according to AccuWeather.

Regarding the US winter forecast, meteorologist Paul Pastelok noted that “in many places, next week’s temperatures will feel more like mid-December or even Christmas.”
