Fatal shooting near Detroit barbershop leaves 2 dead, including police officer

ANOTHER SHOOTING. Authorities reported a fatal shooting near a barbershop on the west side of  Detroit, Michigan that has left at least two people dead. The police found numerous shell casings at the scene of the shooting.

The Detroit Police Department reported that they responded to an emergency call and that the situation quickly turned violent. The officers who first arrived on the scene exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

«RIGHT NOW. A Detroit police officer and a suspect were shot near Joy Rd. and Marlowe St,” local police said in an initial report on social media about what had happened. In that same message they also asked residents to avoid the area.

Authorities later said they had responded to reports that a subject was shooting indiscriminately with a Draco assault rifle. The shooting occurred near a barbershop at 14725 Joy Road, where at least 35 evidence markers were later scattered on the ground to mark shell casings and evidence found.

What happened?

Upon arriving at the scene, the two officers were directly confronted by the gunman who continued to fire. One of the officers, who was one of the first to arrive on the scene, was fatally shot. His partner returned fire and also wounded the suspect.

The officer who was injured in the shooting was rushed to Sinai Grace Hospital, but he was already in critical condition. Authorities later confirmed that he hadn’t survived. The suspect also died, according to FOX11.

«We lost a hero»

“It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform our department and our community that today we lost a hero» Detroit Police Chief James White said in a Press conference. «Our officers are heartbroken.» White did not reveal the identity of the officer as they were first breaking the news to his relatives.

“He shot one of our officers, he killed one of our heroes. I have a family that is grieving. This didn’t have to happen. How do you tell a mother and child what he had to tell them?” he said lamenting the loss.

The suspect was killed

The police chief also indicated that the officer shot dead near Joy Road and Marlowe Street was a five-year veteran who came from a long line of police officers. In fact, he said that the fallen officer’s father had recently retired from the department.

For now, the local police are keeping the investigation of the case open and they are «in the early stages of the investigation.» On Twitter they reported: “Tonight, we lost a hero. A beloved officer was shot to death around 7:40 p.m. near Joy Rd. and Marlowe St. The suspect was also shot to death.”
