Ford has announced a Ford vehicle recall affecting more than 741,000 vehicles in the United States because of a defect that could compromise safety while parking.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the issue involves the transmission and its interaction with the parking system.

According to the agency, some affected models could temporarily engage the parking mechanism while the vehicle is still moving.

This situation could damage internal parking system components, increasing the risk of crashes.

Affected models and production years

The Ford vehicle recall includes the Ford F-150, Ford Explorer, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Aviator, and Lincoln Navigator.

All affected vehicles were manufactured between 2018 and 2021, according to federal regulators.

The report states that the transmission may command gear changes that unexpectedly activate the parking system.

This can affect normal operation, especially when the vehicle is shifted into the «Park» position.

Crash risks identified and reported incidents

Authorities warned that if the parking system is damaged, the vehicle may fail to remain stationary without the parking brake engaged.

Unintended vehicle movement under these conditions could significantly increase the risk of crashes or injuries.

The NHTSA said Ford is aware of 24 reports of property damage and nine alleged injuries linked to the defect.

Among those reports, two involved emotional distress related to the incidents.

What owners should do

Ford will notify affected owners by mail with instructions on how to have the issue repaired free of charge.

Drivers should take their vehicles to an authorized Ford or Lincoln dealership, where technicians will install a software update.

The dealership will also inspect the transmission and replace any damaged parking system components if necessary.

For more information, owners can contact Ford customer service or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline, according to ABC News.
