U.S. Coast Guard Confirms Plane Crash Victims and Continues Search

The U.S. Coast Guard “confirmed this Tuesday the presence of a 2-year-old child among the five victims so far resulting from the plane crash, in waters near the Texas city of Galveston, involving a Mexican Navy aircraft that was transporting the child so he could receive treatment for burns.”

Authorities also detailed that “of the eight people traveling on the plane, one person remains missing, while the health status of the two individuals who were rescued alive is still unknown.”

Medical Mission from Mérida

The crashed aircraft was described as “a twin-engine light transport plane” carrying “four members of the Mexican Navy and four civilians, including the child, who was being transported to the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Galveston in collaboration with the Michou y Mau Foundation, which assists children with severe burns.”

The plane had departed from Mérida, Yucatán, and was heading to Texas to continue the child’s medical treatment, according to data from the FlightRadar24 platform.

The trip was part of cross-border coordination between medical and humanitarian institutions.

Desperate Rescues in the Gulf of Mexico

Among the first testimonies following the crash was that of a local resident who witnessed the incident.

According to his account to CNN, “he jumped into the water and managed to rescue a woman trapped among the plane’s wreckage before rescue teams arrived.”

The accident occurred “yesterday shortly before 3:17 p.m. local time (9:17 p.m. GMT Monday),” in an area where, according to witnesses, visibility was extremely poor due to dense fog.
