The vehicle was carrying a tank loaded with 49,500 liters of gas—known in Mexico as pipas—when it allegedly overturned due to excessive speed.
After the rollover, the fuel began to leak until a large-scale explosion occurred.
The flames reached more than thirty vehicles traveling in the area, multiplying the scope of the disaster.
In its latest report, the Health Secretariat indicated that 18 people remain hospitalized in different medical centers.
Hospitalizations and Medical Care
Likewise, 39 patients who were injured have already been discharged after receiving specialized care.
The Mexico City Attorney General’s Office reported that it opened a case for the crimes of negligent homicide, negligent injury, and property damage.
The driver, who survived the initial impact, remained hospitalized for several days but ultimately died last Tuesday.
The company that owns the truck, Transportadora Silza, stated that it will take responsibility for the consequences arising from the accident.
Safety Debate
For its part, the capital’s government promised support to the families of the victims and to those who remain hospitalized.
The disaster has sparked a debate about safety measures in gas transportation and the maintenance of the units that circulate in the capital and its surrounding areas.
Residents of the area say the blast and smoke column were felt several kilometers away.
The magnitude of the explosion turned the Puente de la Concordia into a zone of devastation, marked by charred cars and debris.
The victims’ families have demanded justice and guarantees that an accident of this magnitude will not be repeated.
Meanwhile, the community of Iztapalapa remains in mourning, moved by a tragedy that shook the heart of eastern Mexico City.
