In a pioneering move, the campaign of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has launched a broadcast channel on the WhatsApp application, aimed at connecting more directly with Latino voters in the United States.

This initiative marks the first time that a U.S. presidential campaign has officially used WhatsApp for political communication.

The new channel, called ‘Latinos con Harris-Walz’, is designed to leverage the popularity of WhatsApp among the Hispanic community.

Julie Chavez Rodriguez, director of Harris’s campaign and of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, also introduced the channel in a video specifically adapted for mobile devices.

«This is the first channel of its kind for a presidential campaign, and it is where you can get behind-the-scenes information, learn about what Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are doing for our Latino families, and much more,» said Chavez Rodriguez, who is the granddaughter of iconic labor leader César Chávez.

Additionally, the channel will offer a variety of content, including daily voice notes, videos, and statements from campaign representatives and allies.

According to the campaign, this effort aims not only to inform voters but also to combat misinformation that affects the Latino community.

Maca Casado, director of Hispanic media for the campaign, also highlighted that the launch of this channel is a demonstration of the Democrats’ commitment to Latino voters.

«Vice President Harris and Governor Walz know the power of our community and fight every day for the issues that matter most to Latino voters,» Casado stated in a press release.

The use of WhatsApp among the Hispanic community is notably high, with 54% of Hispanic adults reporting its use, according to a Pew Research Center survey published in February of this year.

Furthermore, this percentage exceeds that of other ethnic groups, such as Black adults (31%) and White adults (20%).

The launch of the WhatsApp channel coincides with the start of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where Kamala Harris will accept the presidential nomination.

This synchronization underscores the importance of the digital strategy in the campaign, aiming to strengthen the connection with a key electorate in the current U.S. political landscape.
