Kamala Harris, vice president and Democratic candidate, slightly leads Donald Trump in a recent Wall Street Journal (WSJ) poll.
The poll, conducted after the Democratic convention, shows Harris with 48% support compared to Trump’s 47% among American voters.
When independent candidates are included, Harris maintains a 47% to 45% lead over Trump, a difference of 2 percentage points.
However, Harris’s lead is within the poll’s margin of error, which is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
It is the first time since April of last year that a Democrat has outperformed Trump in a WSJ poll.
In July, Trump led Harris by 2 points, but the new numbers reflect a shift in public opinion.
Despite these results, Republicans have reason to be optimistic on some key issues in the WSJ survey.
Trump leads Harris by 8 points on handling the economy, a crucial issue in this election.
He also leads Harris by 5 points on a question about inflation management, a highly relevant issue.
At the end of last year, Trump held a 20-point lead over Biden on economic issues, which has been declining.

In terms of popularity, Harris has improved significantly, with 49% of voters having a favorable opinion of her.
In contrast, Trump has 45% favorable support and 53% unfavorable, a lower rating than Harris.
Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz received a more favorable rating than unfavorable rating, 46% to 40%.
On the other hand, Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, has a 50% unfavorable rating against 40% favorable.
These results highlight a close election campaign, with shifts in public opinion and key issues continuing to evolve.
The WSJ poll reflects the shifting dynamics of the Harris-Trump race, showing an electoral landscape in constant flux.
