IRS offers Hurricane Helene tax relief, extending tax filing and payment deadlines until May 2025 to those affected.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced disaster tax relief for those impacted by Hurricane Helene.
The relief applies to individuals and businesses in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and parts of Florida, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Taxpayers now have until May 1, 2025, to file returns and make payments.
This relief also covers 2023 extensions and estimated quarterly payments for 2024 and 2025.
IRS disaster tax relief for affected taxpayers

The IRS will provide automatic relief to any taxpayer with an address registered in FEMA-designated areas.
Those affected outside the area can contact the IRS for additional assistance.
Taxpayers can claim uninsured losses on their 2023 or 2024 tax returns.
Additionally, affected taxpayers participating in retirement plans or IRAs may benefit from disaster withdrawals without being subject to the additional 10% early withdrawal penalty.
The IRS stated that this relief is part of a coordinated federal response to the damage caused by Hurricane Helene, based on assessments by FEMA.
Taxpayers are reminded they can access free tax preparation services at VITA or TCE sites.
