Born in Yate, Gloucestershire in the United Kingdom on July 31, 1965, JK Rowling is currently 58 years old.
She began writing Harry Potter as a single mother living in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Her first novel was published in 1997 and was an instant success that was followed by six more books.
In addition to being one of the world’s most influential and successful authors, she is known for her activism and working for causes like ending poverty.
Is JK Rowling transphobic?
Not everything has been smooth sailing for JK Rowling, who has sparked controversy for her opinions on social and political issues.
In 2019 she said that only those born biologically female can be considered women.
On several occasions, she has made negative posts about trans women on social media. She has even written transphobic essays.
She has also complained that the rights of trans women overshadow the struggle of people born as biological women.
Rowling dares Scottish police to arrest her
According to the New York Post, JK Rowling recently challenged the Scottish police to arrest her.
The reason? Her negative remarks about trans people after a new hate crime law went into effect on Monday.
«Freedom of speech and belief are at an end in Scotland if the accurate description of biological sex is deemed criminal,» she tweeted.
Siobhian Brown, Scotland’s Minister for Community Safety, said in an interview that these comments could be reported to the police and investigated.
Critics say Scotland’s new law could hinder freedom of speech
Scotland’s hate crime law prohibits hate speech based on age, disability, race, religion, sexual orientation and transgender identity.
Critics have said that this law is too broad and could restrict freedom of speech.
JK Rowling also commented that politicians placed a «higher value on the feelings of men performing their idea of femaleness.»
She continued, «however misogynistically or opportunistically, than on the rights and freedoms of actual women and girls.»
