Man shoots his neighbor’s teenage son over parking dispute

A conflict over parking ended with a 17-year-old hospitalized after being shot in the chest and an elderly man behind bars.
Justo Jorge Arrate Rodríguez, 66, was charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
He is accused of shooting his neighbor’s son twice and then pointing the gun at his daughter for parking the grassy swale in front of his home, authorities reported after the arrest.

«It’s not even on his property,» Hialeah Police Lieutenant Eddie Rodríguez said in a press conference regarding the suspect’s actions.
It was a quiet night for the residents of the 5100 block of East Eighth Lane, in Hialeah, when the two shots were heard and a few minutes later patrol cars swarmed the area.
According to official records, the Hialeah Police Department received a call on Tuesday, January 30 at 7:15 p.m., about a shooting with a possible victim at the scene.
Upon arriving at the location, officers encountered the suspect, who was still brandishing his semi-automatic weapon. Once police arrived he dropped the gun and surrendered.

With the scene secured, emergency personnel took care of the victim, a 17-year-old boy who had gunshot wounds to the chest and one of his arms, the police report states.
The injured teenager was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he is currently hospitalized. He prognosis looks good.
The community was outraged when the reason for the unjustified attack was revealed. Apparently, Arrate Rodríguez was upset when he saw the young man had parked on a grassy area in front of is house.
The argument intensified when he apparently also threatened the boy’s sister.
Authorities got the situation under control

The situation escalated quickly and Arrate Rodríguez pulled out a semi-automatic pistol and fired before anyone could react.
The young man’s sister ran over to help her brother after he was shot but Arrate Rodríguez pointed the gun at her so she took cover behind a car.
The shooter allegedly only allowed the wounded man’s mother to approach, and she remained with him until the paramedics arrived.
Eventually, authorities brought the situation under control and arrested the suspect.

Apparently Arrate Rodríguez and the victim’s father had argued over parking on the grassy area several times..
Arrate Rodríguez was taken to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and charged with second-degree attempted murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. So far he has not been granted bail.
The investigation remains active and detectives are seeking videos from security cameras in the area to corroborate everyone’s stories.
The charges could be modified based on what other evidence they find.
