An unexpected twist led to the capture of Tyler Robinson, identified as the alleged killer of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

According to Utah authorities, a family member decided to alert police after hearing a confession or insinuation directly linking him to the crime that occurred on the Utah Valley University (UVU) campus.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed that the handover took place on the night of September 11, when a relative of Robinson contacted a family friend, who in turn informed the county sheriff. From there, federal agents were able to act quickly.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we got him. On the night of September 11, a relative of Tyler Robinson contacted a family friend, who then contacted the County Sheriff’s Office with information that Robinson had confessed or insinuated that he had committed the incident,” Cox stated at a press conference.

The Clues That Led to Tyler Robinson

After receiving the alert, FBI agents reviewed surveillance cameras and managed to locate the suspect.

According to Cox, Robinson was seen arriving at the campus in a gray Dodge Challenger at 8:29 a.m., shortly before Charlie Kirk’s murder.

Investigators also interviewed a family member, who described Robinson as having become “more political in recent years.”

At the same time, a roommate showed agents messages sent by the suspect through Discord.

According to Cox, Robinson wrote on that platform about the need to “recover a rifle from a drop point” and mentioned that he had left it hidden among bushes.

He also referred to a rifle wrapped in a towel, engravings on bullets, a scope, and that the weapon was “unique.”

Trump’s Announcement and What Comes Next

President Trump, in an interview with Fox News, revealed that the suspect was already in custody and that the capture had been possible thanks to a family member, whom he identified as the suspect’s father.

However, in Cox’s press conference, the degree of kinship of the informant was not specified.

The governor added that during a family dinner before the murder, Robinson mentioned that Charlie Kirk —a close ally of Trump— would be participating in an event at UVU.

At that time, reasons for disagreeing with Kirk’s political views were discussed.

After his arrest, Robinson was transferred to Washington County Jail in southern Utah, where he will remain as the investigation progresses.
