Inter Miami made history on Thursday, June 19, by defeating FC Porto 2–1 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, claiming their first ever victory in a FIFA Club World Cup.
The win came thanks to a comeback led by Lionel Messi, who sealed the score with a free-kick goal that is already being called one of the best of the tournament.
“Messi & Co. mean business in the world’s most important club competition,” stated the MLS after the match.
With this result, the Florida-based team now has four points in Group A and will depend on themselves in the final match against Palmeiras.
Inter Miami Comes from Behind to Beat Porto
Porto took the early lead in the 8th minute, after Samu Aghehowa converted a penalty following a foul on João Mário.
The Portuguese side nearly extended their lead, but Maxi Falcón cleared a shot off the line, and Alan Varela hit the post with a strike.
It looked like Porto’s dominance would earn them a favorable result at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
But everything would change in the second half.
A Second Half Full of Stunning Goals
In the second half, Inter Miami came out determined to turn things around. Telasco Segovia equalized in the 47th minute with a first-time finish off a cross from Marcelo Weigandt.
Seven minutes later, Messi struck with his magical left foot, sending a free kick into the top corner and igniting the crowd in Atlanta.

What’s Next
Next Monday, Inter Miami will face Palmeiras, while Porto will try to stay alive against Al Ahly.
The match against the Brazilian team will decide not only who advances to the next round, but who finishes first in the group.
With Messi in Club World Cup mode, the American team has become an unexpected contender.
