The state of Ohio was shaken after it was revealed that a woman identified as Ruth Miller faces aggravated murder charges after authorities determined she allegedly threw her 4-year-old son into a lake during what has been described as a “spiritual delusion.”
The incident occurred last weekend at Atwood Lake, where little Vincen lost his life under circumstances initially believed to be accidental.
However, the investigation revealed the case was much more serious, as the mother reportedly acted under distorted religious ideas.
According to court records, Miller also faces charges of domestic violence and child endangerment, which could lead to a life sentence.
The Incident at Atwood Lake

On Saturday morning, park rangers received an emergency call reporting that a golf cart with four occupants had plunged into the water.
The vehicle overturned after crashing into a stone wall, which allowed the three teenagers on board to save themselves.

Among them were Miller’s 15-year-old daughter and her 18-year-old twin sons, who escaped unharmed from the accident.
Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell explained that witnesses had shouted at Miller to stop before the crash, but the woman drove directly into the lake.
Disturbing Statements After the Accident
What at first seemed like an accident began to raise doubts because of the woman’s statements shortly afterward.
Miller commented that she had “given her son to the Lord,” which led authorities to suspect the crash was intentional, according to Telemundo.
When questioned further, the woman confessed that during the early morning hours, both she and her husband had jumped into the water following “divine instructions.”
According to Campbell, Miller recounted that God had asked them to endure tests of faith, and when they failed, she decided to offer Vincen as a “sacrifice.”
Mother Accused of Murder in Ohio: Bodies Found in the Lake
Authorities launched a search operation in Atwood Lake, where they found the bodies of little Vincen and Marcus Miller, Ruth’s 45-year-old husband.
Campbell explained that the father returned to the lake later because he felt he had not “fulfilled his mission.”
Investigations suggest the child may have tried to swim toward a sandbank but died in the attempt.
The sheriff added that the mother’s statements clearly reflected a mental health crisis with religious overtones, which he described as a “spiritual delusion.”
Mother’s Background and Legal Situation
Court records indicate that in addition to the two aggravated murder charges for Vincen’s death, Miller also faces charges of domestic violence.
Sheriff Campbell acknowledged that the family had a history of unconventional religious beliefs, although no violent behavior had ever been reported.
Miller was taken to a hospital for evaluation because of the erratic nature of her statements after her arrest.
The county prosecutor’s office confirmed that on Wednesday she remained hospitalized and that the hearing scheduled for Thursday was canceled.
Prosecution and Possible Penalties
According to the Tuscarawas County Prosecutor’s Office, the aggravated murder charges are based on the fact that Miller acted with “premeditation and malice.”
This means she could face the maximum penalty of life in prison if found guilty at trial.
Miller’s defense has not yet been confirmed, as it is unclear whether she has hired a lawyer to represent her.
The sheriff stressed that what happened shows how a mental health crisis can have fatal consequences when mixed with distorted religious beliefs.
A Tragedy That Shocks Ohio
The community of Tuscarawas expressed shock and outrage after learning the details of the tragedy at Atwood Lake.
The murder of little Vincen not only revealed a story marked by spiritual confusion and his mother’s mental decline, but also by the silence surrounding prior family problems.
According to Telemundo, authorities insisted they will continue their investigation while the woman remains in medical custody and the judicial process is prepared.
The case leaves behind a community struck by disbelief and grief, as calls grow for justice for the short life that was taken from Vincen.
