Councilor Guadalupe Urban Dies in Armed Attack While Visiting Her Parents

According to Milenio, political violence has once again struck Oaxaca.

Guadalupe Urban, councilor of the Partido Verde Ecologista de México (PVEM) in the municipality of San Juan Cacahuatepec, was murdered on Thursday morning while visiting her parents’ home in San Antonio Ocotlán.

The attack, carried out by two armed men on a motorcycle, has shocked the region and raised alarms about the risks faced by women holding local public office.

The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Oaxaca (FGE) reported that the crime occurred as the official was leaving her parents’ home.

At that moment, the assailants approached and shot her at point-blank range, causing her instant death.

Neighbors reported the gunfire to authorities, allowing agents from the Regional Deputy Prosecutor’s Office of the Coast to arrive shortly after and cordon off the area.

According to initial reports, Guadalupe Urban’s body was found on the road connecting San Antonio Ocotlán with the municipality of Cacahuatepec.

State authorities confirmed that specialized and multidisciplinary personnel arrived at the scene to recover the body, conduct forensic work, and process the crime scene.

So far, no arrests have been made, and there are few clues about the motives behind the crime.

However, the FGE confirmed that at least two lines of investigation are being pursued: one concerning a possible personal revenge, and another linked to an alleged unpaid debt.

Both hypotheses are being analyzed based on testimonies from the victim’s relatives, friends, and colleagues from the San Juan Cacahuatepec town council.

The murder of the councilor in Oaxaca adds to a series of violent incidents targeting municipal officials and local leaders in the state, which has faced a growing wave of violence in recent months.

Oaxaca Demands Justice for the Feminicide

Several civil organizations have warned that attacks on women in politics represent a threat to democracy and to the exercise of political rights in rural communities.

The National Network of Women Defenders has documented a rise in cases of aggression and homicide against women public servants—particularly in contexts of local disputes or personal conflicts.

Residents of San Antonio Ocotlán described Guadalupe Urban as a woman deeply committed to her community and close to local families.

Her work as a councilor focused on social programs and environmental support projects.

The Partido Verde Ecologista de México issued a statement deeply lamenting the crime and called on state authorities to conduct a swift and transparent investigation.

Meanwhile, the Oaxaca Attorney General’s Office assured that no line of inquiry would be ruled out and that the case would be handled with a gender perspective.

The institution reiterated its commitment to clarifying the events and ensuring justice for the victim and her family.
