- Muñoz Gaviria charged with homicide.
- 24 LGBTIQ+ individuals murdered in 2025.
A Colombian judge has ordered the pretrial detention of Juan Camilo Muñoz Gaviria, known as “Teta,” the alleged perpetrator of the murder of Sara Millerey González, a trans woman who was brutally tortured and dumped into a ravine in Bello, Antioquia, on April 4.
The judge made the decision following a hearing held last Saturday, during which Muñoz Gaviria was charged with aggravated homicide and torture—charges he did not accept.
The Attorney General’s Office reported that Muñoz Gaviria and other individuals, who allegedly exercised social control through various criminal activities in the area, had kidnapped González.
The victim was taken to a yard where she was subjected to savage torture, sustaining serious injuries to her torso, arms, and legs.

Afterward, the attackers threw González into the La García ravine, located in the Playa Rica neighborhood of Bello, and allegedly threatened local residents to prevent them from helping the victim.
Nevertheless, it was her own relatives, together with the fire department, who managed to rescue her and take her to a hospital in Medellín, where the transgender woman died hours later.
The murder of Sara Millerey González caused a profound shock in Colombia, especially due to the extreme violence with which the crime was committed.
Public outrage intensified after a video showing part of the incident circulated on social media.

Organizations such as Caribe Afirmativo, which advocates for LGBTIQ+ rights, condemned the video’s distribution, noting that it was recorded by a witness who made no attempt to help the victim.
“They didn’t just kill Sara. They broke her bones, threw her into a ravine, and left her to die slowly and alone,” stated Caribe Afirmativo, denouncing the act of recording to go viral rather than to aid the victim.
This crime occurs amid an alarming trend of violence against the LGBTIQ+ community in Colombia.
According to the Human Rights Observatory of Caribe Afirmativo, 24 LGBTIQ+ individuals have been murdered so far this year—13 of them in Antioquia.
Additionally, the Attorney General’s Office reported that in 2024, 29 trans people were murdered nationwide, five of them also in Antioquia.
The Office of the Ombudsman has also raised concerns about increasing violence against the trans community.
It reported that in 2024 alone, it provided support to 287 individuals who experienced bias-related violence due to their gender identity—254 of them transgender women.
