The two National Guard officers and the suspect were taken to hospitals. According to U.S. President Donald Trump — who is staying at his Mar-a-Lago residence during the Thanksgiving holiday — the attacker also suffered serious injuries.
“The animal who shot the two National Guardsmen — both gravely injured and now in separate hospitals — is also gravely wounded, but despite everything, he will pay a very high price,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, before the officers’ deaths were formally confirmed.
What Witnesses Saw
Witnesses in the area said they heard two gunshots before people began running for cover.
“We saw two stretchers being taken away in ambulances. On one of them was a man in military clothing — I hope he’s okay,” Mohammed El-Katabi, a man from Atlanta visiting a friend in the capital, told EFE.
El-Katabi said that once the ambulances left, helicopters began flying overhead and a heavy police presence was deployed around the area — an escalation that emphasized the severity of the shooting near the White House.
