New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced the launch of an official web portal designed to document operations carried out by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) within the state.
The platform will allow residents to upload photos and videos of federal immigration agents conducting arrests or operations in local communities.
Sherrill explained that the goal is to gather firsthand information from the public about actions that, according to her administration, are being carried out without sufficient transparency.

“If you see an ICE agent on the street, take out your phone—we want to know about it,” the governor said during an interview last week.
According to Sherrill, the portal is intended to counter what she described as secrecy surrounding federal immigration operations in New Jersey.

The governor stated that her administration does not receive clear information about the identity, legal status, or procedures followed by federal agents during these operations.
“They have not been very communicative,” Sherrill said when describing the state’s relationship with federal immigration authorities.

Sherrill claimed that, according to her administration, agents detain individuals without providing explanations or verifying basic information, as reported by Univision.
She also alleged that federal agents have detained U.S. citizens during these operations.
Sherrill further stated that agents even detained a five-year-old child, according to remarks made during the interview.
“We want documentation, and we are going to make sure we get it,” the governor added in defense of the portal’s creation.

According to Sherrill, the website will be administered by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office.
The portal will allow residents to alert their communities in real time about local immigration operations.
It will also serve as a repository of visual evidence that can be reviewed by state authorities.
The governor explained that this information will help oversee the conduct of federal agents operating within New Jersey.
Her spokesperson, Sean Higgins, confirmed that additional details will be released soon.
Higgins said the administration will explain how the platform will function and what type of content residents will be allowed to upload.
He also noted that further measures related to this state strategy will be announced.
“Keeping New Jersey residents safe is Governor Sherrill’s top priority,” Higgins said in a statement.
He added that the governor and Acting Attorney General Davenport will announce actions aimed at protecting residents.
According to the statement, these measures are intended to respond to what the state views as federal overreach.
Political clash reignites immigration debate
The portal is part of a broader immigration strategy announced by Sherrill.
Proposed measures include restricting federal agents’ access to state-owned properties.
They also include educating residents about their legal rights during immigration operations.
With this initiative, New Jersey joins other states that have adopted similar tools.
Sherrill noted that New York and California launched comparable portals last year.
These platforms allow residents to report alleged legal violations by ICE agents.
Such state-level initiatives have faced opposition from the federal government.
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi has criticized these portals.
Bondi has argued that such platforms endanger the safety of immigration agents.
Sherrill’s announcement comes amid heightened national tension over the actions of federal agents.
It follows the killing of two U.S. citizens by federal agents in Minneapolis in January.
Both incidents were recorded by witnesses and widely circulated online.
The videos triggered protests and unrest in Minnesota and other parts of the country.
In that context, the governor defended the need to document and monitor immigration operations within New Jersey.
