- Mexican Goalkeeper Still a Free Agent in 2025
The 40-year-old Mexican goalkeeper remains a free agent after negotiations with the Spanish club fell apart, just months before the 2026 World Cup.
Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa seemed set to join Burgos in Spain, but the transfer collapsed at the last minute.
According to reports by César Luis Merlo, there was a verbal agreement between the Mexican goalkeeper and the club’s board. However, last-minute contractual differences changed the outcome of the negotiation.
This was reported by TUDN.

Ochoa was even spotted at Burgos’ training facility on Monday morning.
But by the afternoon, the situation had radically shifted.
No deal was signed, and the veteran keeper remains without a team.
From the Spanish club’s side, the version circulated is that there were no changes to the agreement, though the final decision left Ochoa as a free agent.

The situation is critical for Guillermo Ochoa, who at 40 is desperately seeking a new destination to prolong his professional career.
The goalkeeper ended his contract with AVS Futebol in Portugal, and his goal was to stay in Europe for at least one more season.
Although the transfer window closed across much of the continent this Monday, Ochoa still has one advantage: as a free agent, he can sign at any time.
However, his options are narrowing, and uncertainty grows as days pass without a concrete solution.

Time is working against the historic Mexican goalkeeper. With five World Cups already under his belt, Guillermo Ochoa’s ultimate goal is to reach his sixth tournament under coach Javier “Vasco” Aguirre.
But to stay in contention for the Mexican national team, he needs playing time and consistency at the highest level.
Lacking a club not only affects his physical and football preparation but also jeopardizes his chances of making the final squad for 2026.
In a scenario where competition for Mexico’s goalkeeper position has intensified, remaining without a team could seriously harm his aspirations.
Uncertain Future, High Expectations
Meanwhile, Mexican fans are closely following this chapter in Guillermo Ochoa’s career. Burgos seemed like his last clear chance in Europe, but with the deal collapsed, uncertainty is mounting.
It cannot be ruled out that lower-profile clubs—or even teams from Liga MX—could emerge as alternatives.
For now, the goalkeeper will continue training on his own while waiting for a new opportunity.
What’s at stake is not only his continuation in professional football but also the chance to expand his legacy with a sixth World Cup appearance.
