MARYLAND COUNTY ANNOUNCES TEEN CURFEW

Prince George’s County, in Maryland, announced that it has implemented a curfew to combat crime in the area. Angela D. Alsobrooks announced that the curfew will be implemented for those under 17 years of age, The Washington Post reported.
Alsobrooks, declared that the new curfew will take effect on Friday, September 9. The initial purpose of this new regime is to reduce crime that plagues the community. Authorities have been looking for a way to combat increasing violence and crime.
Why is the curfew for young people?

Prince George’s County authorities reported that the curfew is intended for teens. According to statements, this measure was put in place to reduce the rising crime rate in the area.
«It’s a systemic failure to hold young people accountable for their dangerous, risky, and sometimes criminal behavior,» Alsobrooks said at the news conference, according to The Washington Post. The precautionary measure will serve to administer sanctions to young people who do not abide by the new rules.
A high rate of teen arrests?

Alsobrooks pointed out that almost two-thirds of minors arrested by the police had prior records. One of the most impressive facts was that the majority of those who were arrested were 15 years old or younger.
“Nearly two-thirds of the juveniles arrested by police for carjacking this year have prior criminal records, and half were 15 years old or younger,” Alsobrooks said. “I know this isn’t the popular thing to say, but the truth of the matter is, it’s a fair question: Where are their parents? Where are the aunties? Where are the uncles and other family members who are responsible for them?»
How will the curfew work?

The curfew will take effect on Friday, September 9. It will be valid for 30 days between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and between 11:59 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, according to The Washington Post.
«You should know — and I believe this is absolutely astounding — that August was the single deadliest month in Prince George’s County’s history,» Angela D. Alsobrooks told The Washington Post. Putting the curfew into effect is expected to decrease level of violence in the county. Filed Under: Prince George’s County
An endless cycle?

The chief of police spoke about the complaints that the residents had and stressed that the police are also «frustrated» by the incidents that are occurring and that the officers reach a point where they believe that it is a game of “catch and release”, which has complicated the process of prosecuting crimes.
“Only so long can you have police going through a system where they continually arrest and bring people back around in a circle to release to further victimize residents of our county,” said Police Chief Malik. Aziz, after announcing that they are working to prevent the rise in crime in the county. Filed Under: Prince George’s County
