Rafael Amaya is returning to the world of narco-series with a new role that promises to generate conversation both on and off screen.

The Mexican actor, widely recognized for his role in El señor de los cielos, confirmed that he will portray Joaquín Guzmán Loera, known as “El Chapo,” in a production narrated by Emma Coronel Aispuro.

The news was first revealed exclusively to Deadline and later shared by the actor himself on social media.

With this announcement, Amaya adds another high-profile project linked to figures associated with drug trafficking.

“An Incredible Project,” Says Rafael Amaya

The 48-year-old actor expressed enthusiasm about joining the production, which will explore the life of the former leader of the Cártel de Sinaloa.

“It is an honor to work with Emma Coronel and Maritza on this incredible project. We continue building through passion, discipline, and art,” he wrote on his Instagram account.

The post sparked divided reactions among followers—some eager to see the result, others critical of the approach.

Amaya will not only star in the Rafael Amaya El Chapo series, but will also serve as executive producer.

Production and Team Behind the Project

Emma Coronel, former beauty queen and wife of Guzmán Loera, is listed as executive producer.

Maritza Ramos, Amaya’s business partner through Amaya Productions and Zero Gravity Management, is also attached to the project.

According to available information, the team is currently seeking a screenwriter to shape the story.

The series will be bilingual and will center on Coronel’s perspective.

A Story Told from a Different Angle

The project aims to narrate the life of Joaquín Guzmán Loera through the eyes of his wife.

The storyline will explore their relationship as well as the personal and legal consequences faced by Emma Coronel.

The former model served two and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and money laundering charges.

She is currently on supervised release, which is scheduled to conclude in September 2027.

These events are expected to form a key part of the narrative in the new El Chapo series.

The Bond Between Emma Coronel and “El Chapo”

Emma Coronel met Guzmán in 2006 when she was 17 years old.

A year later, in 2007, they married after she reached legal adulthood.

In 2011, their twin daughters, María Joaquina and Emali Guadalupe, were born in Lancaster, California.

These episodes are likely to be included in the story the production intends to bring to the screen.

Amaya’s Return to the Criminal Drama Genre

Rafael Amaya solidified his television career by portraying Amado Carrillo Fuentes in one of the genre’s most popular series.

His new role once again places him in the shoes of a character tied to drug trafficking—this time with a different narrative focus.

Anticipation is growing over how “El Chapo” will be portrayed and which aspects of his story will take center stage.

As the project moves forward in development, the announcement alone has already positioned the El Chapo new series as one of the most talked-about productions in the Latin television landscape.
