Fifty-seven undocumented immigrants were detained following a raid at a snack bar plant in the rural area of Cato, in upstate New York.

This has ignited debate over immigration policy and the enforcement of laws in workplaces.

The operation was confirmed by John Sarcone, acting U.S. attorney for northern New York, who explained that five of the detainees were criminally charged with illegally reentering the country.

Meanwhile, the other 52 were placed in custody awaiting deportation proceedings, according to CNN.

Sarcone warned that actions against employers hiring people without legal authorization will continue and insisted that “the days of turning a blind eye are over.”

The advocacy group Rural and Migrant Ministry noted that most of those arrested are originally from Guatemala and had been working at Nutrition Bar Confectioners.

The raid coincided with another massive operation the same day in Georgia, where immigration authorities detained 475 people at a factory linked to automaker Hyundai.

The owners of the New York plant had stated last week that all their employees held legal documents and said they did not know why they were targeted.

Impact on the Snack Plant

As of Tuesday, they had not responded to new media requests for comment.

According to witnesses cited by the AP, federal agents arrived on Thursday morning, ordered workers to gather in the lunchroom, and demanded proof of legal status.

Photos and videos show the detainees being transported in Border Patrol vans.

Democratic officials criticized the raid, describing it as an example of hardline immigration enforcement under Trump’s government.

Debate Over U.S. Immigration Policy

Governor Kathy Hochul expressed concern about the impact on families, noting that at least a dozen children risked returning from school to find their homes empty.

However, Sarcone clarified that social service agencies participated in the operation to avoid that scenario.

The situation has generated tension between authorities, immigrant advocates, and employers, marking another episode in U.S. immigration policy.
