Meat sold at Publix recalled due to Listeria risk

An urgent recall of meat products sold at Florida Publix stores has been announced.
Don Novo & Son, a Miami-based company, has recalled some of its ready-to-eat meat products.
This comes after a sample collected by a state public health partner tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

Publix announced the recall as well as the the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) noted that despite this, no illness has been reported in relation to these products.
The products that could be contaminated by Listeria include Don Novo Smoked Ribs, Don Novo Smoked Pork Loin, Don Novo Mortadella and Don Novo Chorizo.
Listeria is a bacteria that can cause serious infections, with symptoms such as fever and muscle pain, among others.
Don Novo & Son products recalled

The recalled products carry the establishment number ‘EST. 34257’ within the USDA inspection mark and were distributed in retail establishments in Florida.
The problem was reported to the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
They were notified that a sample collected by a state public health partner tested positive for the presence of L. monocytogenes bacteria.
Although no one has reported becoming ill after consuming these products, consumers are advised not to eat them.
What are the risks of Listeria?

Anyone concerned about an illness related to food contamination is urged to contact a healthcare provider.
Listeriosis, caused by the bacteria L. monocytogenes, can have serious consequences, especially for older adults.
It also affects people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and their newborns.
Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches and headache, among others.
What to do if you purchased the affected products

Listeria can cause miscarriages, stillbirths or fatal infections in newborns and pregnant women.
Consumers who have purchased these products are strongly recommended not to consume them and to return them to the place of purchase or dispose of them properly.

Don Novo meat recalled

FSIS warns that some of the recalled Don Novo products could still be found in refrigerators or freezers of retailers and consumers.
Therefore, the importance of taking all necessary precautions to avoid possible exposure to Listeria is stressed.
Consumers are urged to carefully check their homes to make sure they don’t have any of the recalled meat products.
Likewise, stores are urged to check their inventory and remove of the recalled Don Novo meat.
