Police are now investigating whether the two massacres are connected and part of the same criminal group’s strategy.

Numbers That Show the Crisis
The Ecuadorian Observatory of Organized Crime reported more than 4,600 homicides in the first half of 2025.
That represents a 47% increase compared to the same period in 2024, underscoring the country’s rapidly worsening criminal landscape.
Experts point to disputes over drug trafficking routes and territorial control, which have turned Ecuador into one of the most violent nations in the region.
The TikTok massacre in Santo Domingo has become a grim symbol of how public and brutal organized crime has become in the country, according to El Heraldo de México.
