  • Sheinbaum denies inciting protests in the US.
  • She responded to Kristi Noem.
  • She firmly rejected Noem’s accusations.

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, firmly rejected the accusations made by US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, who claimed that the Mexican leader encouraged the protests in Los Angeles against immigration raids.

“We have never called for a violent mobilization,” Sheinbaum stated during her morning press conference at the National Palace.

The president maintained that her words were taken out of context and wrongly linked to the unrest that took place last Sunday in California, where at least 61 Mexicans were arrested during ICE operations.

This was reported by EFE.

Sheinbaum insisted that her discourse has always been a call for the peaceful defense of Mexican migrants in the U.S. and rejected any suggestion that she incited violence.

“They are trying to twist a statement made three weeks ago about a remittance tax. We never called for violence because we don’t believe in it,” she explained.

The president clarified that her earlier statements were in response to a U.S. proposal for a 3.5% tax on remittances and had nothing to do with the recent events in Los Angeles.

“It is absolutely false,” she emphasized.

Sheinbaum’s statements come amid the visit to Mexico by US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, with whom she will address the issue directly.

The president reiterated that Mexico will always seek a respectful but firm bilateral relationship:

“That does not mean subordination,” she noted. She reaffirmed that the Mexican government will defend its citizens both inside and outside the country:

“We must always act with a cool head, but with firmness in defense of our sovereignty.”

Sheinbaum once again called for a “comprehensive immigration reform” in the United States that recognizes the contributions of Mexican migrants.

“Immigration issues will not be resolved through raids or violence,” she said.

Meanwhile, ICE raids continue in several cities, heightening tensions in the bilateral relationship.
