The U.S. federal government has announced an increase in benefits for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) starting in April 2025.

This adjustment follows the annual cost-of-living updates, known as COLA, which are systematically applied to public assistance programs nationwide.

SNAP, overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) through the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), is the country’s largest food assistance program.

Its mission is to provide financial support to low-income individuals and families so they can purchase healthy food at authorized retailers using EBT cards.

The fiscal year 2025 officially began on October 1, 2024, and since then, several significant changes have been applied to SNAP benefit amounts.

The updates reflect economic and social shifts that have directly affected the cost of living in the United States over recent months.

One of the key changes for this fiscal year concerns the eligibility age for certain beneficiaries.

Adults without dependents who are physically able to work—known as ABAWDs—must now meet work requirements to continue receiving benefits.

Previously, these requirements applied to individuals between 18 and 50 years old. That range has now been extended to include those up to 54 years of age.

ABAWDs must prove they work at least 80 hours per month or participate in qualifying work programs for the same number of hours.

New exempt groups have also been added, though eligibility will be determined based on specific criteria.

In terms of income limits, applicants must not exceed 130% of the federal poverty level to qualify for SNAP benefits.

Final SNAP benefit amounts are calculated based on a household’s net income, which is the income remaining after applying authorized deductions.

The maximum allotments for April 2025 reflect an increase that varies depending on household size and the state of residence.

For a family of four living in the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., the maximum monthly benefit will be $975.

Meanwhile, the minimum benefit for those same areas will remain at $23, unchanged from the previous year.

These are the newly approved monthly maximum SNAP amounts for April 2025 in the 48 states and D.C.:

  • One-person household: $292
  • Two people: $536
  • Three people: $768
  • Four people: $975
  • Five people: $1,158
  • Six people: $1,390
  • Seven people: $1,536

Meanwhile, eight people would get $1,756 and for each additional person: add $220.

It’s important to note that these amounts may differ in territories such as Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, where the cost of living is higher.

The USDA also applies special adjustments for households with elderly adults, individuals with disabilities, or young children.

This April increase aims to offer greater food security to families facing financial hardship in the current inflationary climate.

Current beneficiaries are encouraged to check their status and verify if they qualify for the updated amounts.

Those not yet enrolled can review eligibility requirements and apply through their state offices or official portals.

The government reiterated its commitment to keeping assistance programs updated according to the country’s economic conditions.

Additionally, SNAP remains a cornerstone in the fight against food insecurity in the United States, Marca USA reported.
