  • Genny de Bernardo shares a Hopi legend about the union of the lobster and the frog and teamwork.
  • It reminds us that there are people we never imagine will be friends for life.
  • A legend that shows we might be different but sometimes have the same goals.

In Qowakina, a beautiful and peaceful place where the frog Paqua resided, a truly memorable event took place.

Paqua was comfortably perched on a damp rock on a hot day, dedicating herself to singing an emotional prayer in hopes of invoking the long-awaited rain.

For her, it was her infallible method to attract the necessary precipitation to the region.

The Hopi woman who shared this story began to sing a short and rhythmic song, which had a tone similar to a sweet lullaby.

Not far from there, Mahu, the lobster, was also in her small bush, dedicated to singing her own melody in the midst of the scorching heat and the disturbing layer of dust that covered the day.

In her song, she fervently prayed for rain. Her song, of undeniable beauty, resonated in the atmosphere as follows, as described by Guanyanum Sacknumptewase in the ancient Hopi language.

Gradually, the lobster began to pick up the harmonious sounds emitted by the frog.

Feeling curious, she decided to investigate the origin of such a captivating song.

Finally, she located Paqua and asked her an intriguing question about the reason for her song. Paqua, with a smile, explained that her melody was meant to induce rain due to the stifling heat surrounding them.

The lobster, nodding in understanding, replied: «It’s not strange at all, as I also perform the same ritual to attract rain.»

From that moment on, both creatures began to sing their songs together.

As they raised their voices in harmonious unison, they noticed how imposing clouds approached on the horizon and, finally, the long-awaited rain began to fall, flooding them with deep joy.

From that day forward, these two beings became great and dear friends.

This is because they discovered that they shared not only the same belief in the influence of their chants on the rain but also the same passionate method to attract it.

The legend perfectly illustrates the message that, although we might be different, we share tastes and goals that unite us beyond anything else.

Mitos y Leyendas bids you farewell for now and hopes that the Hopi legend of the lobster and the frog has been to your liking. See you next time!
