‘The ugliest dog in the world’ is called Wild Thang

• Wild Thang, champion after five attempts.

Wild Thang was crowned the winner as the world’s ugliest dog and took home the $5,000 prize after five previous attempts.

«He was a fan favorite… he was like the bridesmaid, never the bride,» judge Fiona Ma told the Associated Press.

“It really struck a chord with us and he deserved to win,” Ma added.

As a puppy, Wild Thang, an 8-year-old Pekingese contracted a virus that nearly killed him and left him with permanent damage.

His teeth never developed, so his tongue sticks out, and his right front leg paddles all the time.

His caregivers say he is a «healthy and happy» dog.

Ann Lewis, the animal’s owner, took home a check for $5,000 for winning the contest.

«He’s never had his hair cut, so he is the way he is and (his owner) shaves his belly and he likes to sleep on ice packs,» Ma said.

The contest is not about making fun of dogs, the organizers emphasize.

«But about having fun with wonderful characters and showing the world that these dogs are really beautiful.»

«He’s a very affectionate dog, I was hugging him and he loves to be hugged,» Ma continued.

«That’s part of it, these rescued dogs just need forever homes, so please adopt, don’t buy,» Ma concluded.
