Blow to the Most Vulnerable: Thousands of Families in NY Will Lose SNAP and Medicaid Due to New Law, According to Governor Hochul
Millions in New York could lose medical coverage and food assistance as a result of cuts to Medicaid and SNAP.
- Cuts to Medicaid and SNAP will affect millions of New Yorkers: without medical coverage and without food assistance.
- An estimated $13 billion blow to the health system and a historic increase in food insecurity.
- Congress will vote on the law and New York will have to decide how to protect the most affected families.
Governor Kathy Hochul and Congressman Ritchie Torres sounded the alarm about the effects of the Republican law.
The new law, called the “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBBA), seeks to dismantle key social programs.
The projections are grim: 1.5 million people will lose their health insurance and more than 300,000 households will be left without food assistance.
Medicaid: Millions at Risk of Losing Coverage

The state of New York estimates that more than 2 million New Yorkers will lose health insurance coverage.
Among them, 730,000 legal residents would lose access to the Essential Plan because the law eliminates more than half of its funding.
In the Bronx, the effects are immediate: 94,094 people would be excluded from Medicaid and 12,809 would lose their essential coverage. A health crisis in a district where access is already limited.
SNAP: The Direct Impact on Household Tables

The law marks a historic shift for SNAP:
- For the first time, states would have to assume part of the program’s costs.
- If New York does not cover those funds, nearly 3 million residents could be left without food assistance.
The state would face an additional $1.4 billion in annual spending, a challenge that would be difficult to meet.
According to a new report by the state comptroller, 1 in 8 New York households already suffered from food insecurity between 2021 and 2023.
Impact of Trump’s Law on Hospitals and Families
Hospitals will be forced to cover an $8 billion “gap.”
More uninsured patients mean more medical debt and less access to basic services.
For many families, losing SNAP is equivalent to having to choose between eating or paying rent.
And without Medicaid, medical expenses could sink communities that depend on the social safety net even further.
What Authorities Are Saying
Governor Hochul stated:
“Republicans in Washington are determined to inflict irreparable harm… stripping health care and food subsidies from the families who depend on them.”
Many of the kids at the new @TCFDiscovery Children’s Specialty Hospital receive services through Medicaid.

Congressman Torres was blunt:
“Trump’s ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ is a terrible nightmare for the Bronx… they have put hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers at risk just to fund tax breaks for billionaires.”
State Commissioner James McDonald warned that the consequences would be “devastating,” affecting both patients and hospitals.
What to Expect in the Coming Months
The debate in Congress will determine the future of these programs.
If the law moves forward, New York would have to find alternatives to finance a system that is already stretched to its limits.
Community organizations and local leaders are preparing to mobilize: citizen pressure will be key in the political battle to save Medicaid and SNAP.
