Former President Barack Obama has become the target of an alarming rise in death threats on social media.
This comes after current President Donald Trump and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard accused him of “treason.”
The accusations, tied to alleged manipulation of intelligence about Russian interference in 2016, have sparked extreme reactions on platforms aligned with Trump supporters.
Newsweek reported the developments.

That is unfortunate. Those making threats should be prosecuted. If the allegations that were leveled are found to be true – all connected to those allegations should also be prosecuted.

The controversy began on July 19 when Gabbard released a report accusing Barack Obama and members of his administration of having “fabricated intelligence” about Russia to “stage a years-long coup” against Trump.
She pledged to refer those involved to the Department of Justice.
Two days later, Trump shared an AI-generated video on his Truth Social platform depicting Barack Obama being arrested and jailed.
After that, comments calling for the former president’s imprisonment or execution surged on platforms such as Truth Social, Gab, and Telegram.
According to the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE), between July 17 and July 20, such posts increased by 1,100% on Truth Social, by 433% on Gab, and appeared for the first time on Telegram.
GPAHE warns that this kind of rhetoric not only fuels violent extremism but also normalizes dangerous ideas that threaten democracy.

A White House spokesperson said that President Trump “condemns all forms of violence,” while reaffirming his belief in “accountability” for those who commit crimes.
Gabbard also stated she opposes violence but defended the need to investigate officials from the previous administration.
Trump continued his accusations on Tuesday, calling Barack Obama the “ringleader” of what he described as a conspiracy to steal the election from him.
He said it was “time to go after those people,” including former CIA Director John Brennan.
Obama Responds and Denies the Allegations
Barack Obama’s office broke its silence with an unusual statement, dismissing the claims as “ridiculous” and a “weak attempt at distraction.”
They pointed out that findings about Russian interference—though not vote manipulation—were confirmed by a bipartisan Senate report in 2020, chaired by Republican Marco Rubio.
The episode highlights how incendiary rhetoric from political leaders can influence public discourse and increase tensions between the current administration and past figures.
