A comment by an American comedian has sparked outrage in Puerto Rico.

Tony Hinchcliffe, a supporter of Donald Trump, referred to the island as a «floating island of trash.»

The statement was made during a rally at Madison Square Garden in New York before an audience of around 20,000 people.

The reaction on the island was swift, and several Puerto Rican artists raised their voices.

Ricky Martin shared a video of the speech with the caption: «This is what they think of us.»

The singer urged the community to share the video “for the dignity of our community.”

Luis Fonsi, another advocate for the Puerto Rican community, called Hinchcliffe’s remark «a lack of respect.»

Residente encouraged his followers not to support the Republican Party and its candidate Donald Trump.

Bad Bunny joined the criticism, retweeting a message from the pro-independence candidate Juan Dalmau.

The urban music star added, «OUR BORICUAS need to return to THEIR HOME.»

Hinchcliffe responded to the backlash on the social network X, claiming his words were taken out of context.

The comedian stated that «Puerto Ricans have no sense of humor» and that he laughs at everyone.

The controversy over Tony Hinchcliffe’s comment has generated reactions even from the Democratic Party, which demanded clarifications from Trump.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) also called for an apology for the statements.

Tension is rising just days before the November 5 elections, where the Puerto Rican community hopes to be heard.
