President Donald Trump announced on Friday the termination of all trade negotiations with Canada.

This move comes in retaliation for the implementation of a new digital services tax.

A tax that impacts major US tech giants.

So reported EFE.

Trump Breaks Off Trade Negotiations with Canada

In a post on his Truth Social network, Trump described the Canadian tax as “a direct and blatant attack on our country.”

According to the president, Canada is following the example of the European Union, which has also adopted similar measures targeting US-based tech companies such as Google, Amazon, and Meta.

The Canadian tax, which came into effect this month, aims to levy revenues earned by foreign companies through digital services provided within Canadian territory.

Directly affecting high-profile US firms.

Criticism of Trade Relations

Trump lashed out at Canada, calling it “a very difficult country to TRADE with” and criticized previous tariffs of up to 400% imposed on US dairy products.

This is not the first time the president has leveled accusations against Ottawa in the context of bilateral trade disputes.

The president’s reaction aligns with his policy of “trade reciprocity.”

Where any measure considered unfair by a foreign country must be countered with tariff retaliation.

New Tariffs Coming

Trump stated that his administration will announce new tariffs against Canadian products within seven days. “We will let Canada know the tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within a period of seven days,” he wrote.

This announcement marks a new chapter of trade tension between the two countries, who already had significant clashes during Trump’s first term over NAFTA, which was later renegotiated as the USMCA.

Analysts warn that the decision could strain diplomatic and trade relations precisely at a time of global economic recovery and the restructuring of technological supply chains.
