The government of President Donald Trump ended an investigation into Tom Homan, the border czar, despite accusations that he had accepted a bribe.

According to revelations by The Washington Post, the case pointed to a possible act of corruption that occurred shortly before Trump’s return to the White House.

Trump Closes the Bribery Investigation Into Homan

The Facts

According to two sources close to the matter and an investigative document cited by the newspaper, Tom Homan was caught on video receiving a bag containing $50,000 in cash from undercover FBI agents in Texas in September 2024.

At that time, Homan was not a government official, although he was already considered a likely candidate for a top immigration post if Trump won the November presidential election — which ultimately happened.

The agents posed as businessmen interested in contracts related to tightening immigration laws, one of Trump’s central campaign promises.

The Process

The Washington Post reported that the Department of Justice opened the investigation during the final months of the Biden administration.

However, the new Republican government closed it this year, citing a “lack of credible evidence” and dismissing it as a “political investigation.”

Although the video appeared compromising, doubts remained about whether Tom Homan could be prosecuted since he did not hold an official post when he allegedly received the money.

The investigation first came to light through MSNBC and was linked to a businessman connected to border security contracts, who allegedly directed agents toward Homan as a potential contact.

Political Context of Tom Homan’s Bribery Investigation

Tom Homan served as director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during Trump’s first term.

With the Republican’s return to the White House, Homan once again assumed a key role in immigration policy.

Currently, he leads — alongside Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem — the administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

In just eight months in office, Trump’s government has reported more than 200,000 deportations, according to official figures.

The outcome of this case highlights the tension between investigations launched during Joe Biden’s administration and decisions made after Trump’s return.

Beyond the legal aspects, the episode leaves open questions about ethics and the influence of political appointments in the face of bribery allegations.

What impact do you think these investigations into Tom Homan have on public trust in the officials responsible for immigration policy?
