U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 50% increase in tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
This measure is a response to Ontario’s decision to raise the cost of electricity it exports to the U.S. by 25%.
Trump justified the measure through Truth Social and ordered its implementation starting this Wednesday, March 12.
The new tariffs will particularly affect Canada and Mexico, the main metal exporters to the U.S.
National emergency in the US and threat of automotive tariffs
The president declared a «national emergency on electricity» in the states of New York, Michigan, and Minnesota.
The practical impact of the national emergency on the electricity supply remains unclear.
Trump threatened to raise tariffs on the automotive industry if Canada does not remove its «outrageous» tariffs on U.S. products.
He warned that taxes on cars could permanently shut down automotive manufacturing in Canada.
The president demanded that Canada remove its tariffs of up to 390% on U.S. dairy products.
Canada applies these tariffs only when an annual import quota previously agreed upon is exceeded.

Trump suggested that Canada should become the 51st state of the U.S. to eliminate tariffs.
