The Trump administration has decided to indefinitely freeze immigration applications for individuals who entered the United States under programs created by the Biden administration.

This measure, revealed in an internal document from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and reported by CBS News, also affects pending applications for «humanitarian parole» programs.

The suspended programs include CHNV, which benefits Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan citizens;

Unite for Ukraine, designed for Ukrainian nationals; and the family reunification process for Cubans, Ecuadorians, and Colombians.

According to official data, more than 800,000 people have entered the United States under these programs, which granted two-year temporary permits to live and work in the country.

The decision comes just one month after Trump eliminated «parole» for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans, one of Biden’s immigration programs implemented in late 2022.

This program allowed more than 500,000 migrants to legally enter the United States with the possibility of seeking additional benefits, such as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or asylum.

With this new measure, thousands of people already in the country now face uncertainty, as the program suspension leaves their immigration processes in limbo.

According to CBS News, the government justifies this action by citing alleged concerns over «fraud and national security» within the benefits adjudication system.

Organizations advocating for immigrant rights have expressed alarm over this decision.

Groups such as the American Immigration Council and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) warn that the suspension of these programs will negatively impact families seeking reunification and individuals who have fled humanitarian crises in their home countries.

Additionally, they argue that the removal of the humanitarian parole may lead to an increase in irregular migration, as many individuals may attempt to cross the border unlawfully due to the lack of legal options.

What Will Happen to Humanitarian Parole Beneficiaries?

Several humanitarian parole beneficiaries have voiced distress over the uncertainty surrounding their immigration status.

«We don’t know what’s going to happen to us. We came with the hope of building a life in the U.S., and now we are left in limbo,» said a Cuban immigrant affected by the measure.

Immigration policy experts point out that the freeze on these programs is part of Trump’s broader strategy to tighten U.S. immigration laws.

During his previous term, the former president promoted multiple restrictions, including the elimination of DACA and the implementation of the «Remain in Mexico» policy for asylum seekers.

As of now, DHS has not issued any official statements regarding the decision of President Trump to halt the humanitarian parole, despite requests for information from EFE News Agency.

Further statements are expected in the coming days, and pro-immigrant organizations will likely continue to pressure the government to reverse this measure.
