Over 50 countries have sought to negotiate with President Donald Trump following the imposition of a global 10% tariff.
This was confirmed by Kevin Hassett, Director of the White House National Economic Council, who revealed that the measure has triggered significant diplomatic movement.
The tariff announced by Trump took effect on Saturday at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time, and fears are mounting over potential instability in international financial markets.
During a day labeled by the president as “Liberation Day,” on April 2, it was announced that the 10% tariff would apply to 184 countries and territories, as well as to the European Union.

Additionally, in certain specific cases — such as imports from Europe and China — the tariff rate increased to 20% or even 34%.
Consequences were swift. Entities like JPMorgan warned of a potential path toward recession in the US and also forecast a rise in prices for consumers.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell echoed these concerns, stating that the tariffs would lead to higher inflation and economic slowdown.
However, Hassett defended the government’s decision. He acknowledged that “there could be some increase” in prices, but argued that the economic burden would not be significant for consumers.
He claimed that the tariffs are not taxes per se, since “they depend on supply and demand,” according to EFE.
He also emphasized that Trump’s administration’s goal is to reduce taxes, spending, and regulation while establishing a “baseline tariff line” against the toughest economic actors.
A notable point was Russia’s absence from the list of affected countries. Hassett explained that Moscow was excluded due to its involvement in peace negotiations with Ukraine.
Unlike historic allies such as Europe, Canada, and Mexico, Russia was given different treatment for “being in the middle of talks that affect thousands of people.”
